Therapy for
LGBTQIA Folks
Affirming care that honors your identity and your healing.
At Avena, we offer therapy that affirms your identity without hesitation or assumption. Whether you’re navigating coming out, healing from past harm, unpacking internalized messages, or just craving a space where you don’t have to filter yourself — we’re here for it, and for you.
This is a space where pronouns aren’t questioned, relationships don’t need defending, and you don’t have to explain who you are before we get to the work. Our approach is rooted in lived understanding, deep respect, and the belief that healing looks different for everyone.
We don’t believe in shrink-wrapped solutions or “fixing” who you are. Instead, we’ll explore what you’re carrying, what you’re craving, and how you want to feel — in your body, your relationships, your community, and your own skin.
Therapy here is about coming home to yourself — with care, with support, and with the freedom to take up space.LGBTQIA Therapist Near Me
Here's what we'll work on in therapy:
Unpacking internalized shame and rewriting the narratives that never belonged to you
Navigating identity exploration with curiosity, compassion, and zero pressure to rush the process
Processing the impact of rejection, microaggressions, or past harm in a space that gets it
Building confidence in your voice, your boundaries, and your right to take up space
Healing from family dynamics, faith-based trauma, or cultural expectations that don’t align with who you are
Creating relationships — with yourself and others — that feel safe, expansive, and rooted in truth
Where Can I Find an LGBTQ-Friendly Therapist Near Me?
Avena Psychological Services offers virtual LGBTQ-affirming therapy across New York and New Jersey, so you can access support without having to find someone local who happens to be a good fit. Our therapists lead with affirmation, not assumption, so you won’t need to educate anyone on your identity before the real work starts.
What Should I Look for in a Therapist to Help Me Come Out?
Look for a therapist who treats coming out as a process, not a single event. Coming out can bring up fear, relief, grief, and everything in between, and it rarely happens all at once. The right therapist helps you navigate identity exploration with curiosity and zero pressure to rush, whether you're just beginning to explore who you are or figuring out how and when to share it with the people in your life.
What Happens in a First Session With a Gender-Affirming Therapist?
Your first session is a space to talk through what’s bringing you to therapy without having to justify your identity first. A gender-affirming therapist will already understand terminology and use your name and pronouns correctly, so the conversation can focus on what you’re exploring, whether that’s your gender, a transition, or simply wanting a space where you don’t have to explain yourself.
What's the Difference Between an LGBTQ-Affirming Therapist and a General Therapist?
A general therapist can offer good support, but an LGBTQ-affirming therapist has specific experience with minority stress, family rejection, chosen family, and identity development. That means less time spent educating your therapist and more time spent actually healing, since the nuances of LGBTQIA experiences don't need to be explained from scratch.
Can a Therapist Help With Non-Monogamy or Open Relationship Dynamics Too?
Yes. Queer relationships don’t always follow the scripts most therapists are trained on, and our therapists bring real understanding to non-monogamy, open relationships, and dynamics that blend queer and cultural expectations. You won’t need to justify your relationship structure before getting into the actual work.
How Do I Know if a Therapist Is Actually Trans-Affirming vs. Just Says So?
A truly trans-affirming therapist won't treat your identity as the presenting problem. They'll already understand terminology, use your name and pronouns without prompting, and be equipped to support whatever your journey includes, whether that's social transition, medical steps, family dynamics, or simply learning to feel at home in yourself, all without you having to test them on it first.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does LGBTQ-affirming therapy mean?
LGBTQ-affirming therapy means working with a therapist who actively supports and validates your sexual orientation and gender identity as a healthy part of who you are, rather than something to overlook or stay neutral about. It means your therapist has training and lived understanding of LGBTQIA experiences, uses your correct name and pronouns without hesitation, and creates a space where you don’t have to explain or defend your identity before getting to the real work of therapy.
Do I need to already know how I identify to start therapy?
Not at all. Many people come to therapy in the middle of figuring things out, and that’s a completely valid place to start. You don’t need labels or certainty to begin, you just need a space where exploration is welcomed without pressure or judgment. Our therapists support you wherever you are in that process, even if “wherever you are” is still an open question.
Can therapy help with coming out?
Yes. Therapy can be a steady, supportive space to think through when, how, and if you want to come out to different people in your life. We help you process the fear or uncertainty that can come with it, prepare for conversations that feel high-stakes, and work through whatever reactions follow, whether that’s relief, grief, or something more complicated.
Is LGBTQ therapy covered by insurance?
It can be. We accept insurance from Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and United Healthcare, which also covers Optum, Oscar, Oxford, and UMR plans. If your provider isn’t listed, you may still have out-of-network benefits we can help you use, and we also offer private pay options if that’s a better fit.
