Assessment Expectations

A typical experience during a psychological evaluation will consist of a couple of meetings with a psychologist to complete various parts of the process.

Psychological assessment entails a thorough clinical interview, a variety of relevant psychological testing (cognitive, personality, neuropsychological), and multiple testing types (self-report, projective, broad-band testing, specific-issue tests).

1. The first session typically consists of the clinical interview, during which the psychological evaluator will ask a series of detailed questions about your history and current experiences. These questions will focus on a number of important areas of your life, including your family and upbringing, education and employment, mental health history, and medical history.

2. Subsequent sessions will primarily focus on administering the psychological tests your evaluator has chosen to be included in the assessment, depending on the nature of the assessment. These tests typically include a series of multiple-choice questions you will complete, and may sometimes also include other exercises or activities.

3. Whenever possible, depending on the nature of the evaluation, your psychological evaluator will also meet with you for a feedback session to discuss the results of the assessment and any recommendations for further treatment or attention.

The time for a full psychological assessment may vary, but will typically be completed in 2-3 meetings with your evaluator.
